10 female ABA presidents: Advice for new graduates

10 female presidents of the American Bar Association pass on their secrets for a successful legal career to recent graduates, as law students nationwide celebrate as newly minted lawyers.

For the last five years, women have comprised the majority of students pursuing Juris Doctor degrees in the United States.

The 10 female ABA presidents include: 

  • Roberta Cooper Ramo (1995-1996)
  • Martha W. Barnett (2000-2001)
  • Karen J. Mathis (2006-2007)
  • Carolyn B. Lamm (2009-2010)
  • Laurel G. Bellows (2012-2013)
  • Paulette Brown (2015-2016)
  • Linda A. Klein (2016-2017)
  • Hilarie Bass (2017-2018)
  • Judy Perry Martinez (2019-2020)
  • Patricia Lee Refo (2020-2021)

Deborah Enix-Ross of New York will become the 11th woman to lead the ABA in August 2022.
