Membership Committee: Law Student Mentorship

The ABA Tax Section Membership Committee's Law Student Outreach Subcommittee is launching a mentorship program to support law students interested in tax careers. We are offering various levels of participation based on your schedule, from a short phone call to a quick job talk, all the way to ongoing mentoring.

To participate, please volunteer here by May 31, 2024.

Volunteer Opportunities include:

  • Mentor to Group: Meet with a small group of law students once a month for 6 months. Share advice and resources with students specific to careers in tax law. You could also invite guests to share information with students during the monthly group calls.
  • One-on-one Mentor: Serve as a mentor to one law student at a time. The commitment will last 6 months but mentors can offer to extend their mentorship beyond that if they choose.
  • Guest Speaker: Talk to law students about the work that you do and explain your career trajectory. This can be an informal 20-minute discussion with a group of law students.
  • One-off Phone Calls: For those who would be willing to talk on the phone with a law student for a brief call to answer their questions.
  • LinkedIn Contact: Have law students interested in tax careers contact you on LinkedIn. This could be to help expand their network or to reach out with questions.
  • Share a Unique Story: If you have a story you are willing to share with students that may inspire them like finding work despite having bad grades in law school, overcoming challenges, finding fulfilling work outside of traditional hiring programs, first in your family to attend law school, etc.
