Andy Gowder’s New Firm

After 30 years with the same firm where he was a summer law clerk, past Section Chair Andy Gowder has set off on a new adventure, forming a new partnership with his law school classmate, friend, and longtime law partner Jon Austen. Austen & Gowder, LLC will remain based in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, though up the peninsula a bit, in the same neighborhood where tech start-ups, nonprofits, microbreweries, design studios, barbeque joints, and artists are heading. The new partners are up-fitting a former garage and woodworking shop to house their offices, which features polished concrete floors, glass, wood, and midcentury modern furnishings—a complete break from the 19th century trappings of their former offices at 16 Charlotte Street.

Jon Austen will carry on his mediation and arbitration practice, serving as neutral for South Carolina lawyers and their clients to assist them in resolving their lawsuits and other disputes. Andy will continue his eclectic practice representing his many clients as corporate general counsel and concentrating in the areas of corporate formation and governance (for-profit and nonprofit), land use, local government, regulatory takings, land conservation and historic preservation, trademarks, and copyright.
