Law Student Engagement Committee Agenda 2023–2024

David Husband and Stacey Zumo

The Law Student Engagement Committee (LSEC) aims to connect JD and LLM students to opportunities with SciTech’s substantive committees, legal education programs, and Section activities. LSEC supports students’ professional development by offering ways to get involved with projects related to their areas of interest and providing networking, leadership, speaking, and writing opportunities. LSEC also works to facilitate students’ involvement in SciTech as they graduate and become practicing members of the bar and to support their continuing development as future SciTech leaders. In fact, three of LSEC’s leaders started out as law student volunteers with LSEC! The LSEC leadership is excited to share its agenda for the upcoming school year.

As in past years, LSEC will continue to assign law student volunteers to substantive committees in accordance with the students’ interests and backgrounds as well as the needs of the committees and their projects. LSEC will coordinate with committee co-chairs to ensure law student volunteers engage with their assigned committee(s) in a meaningful way and that committees benefit from the volunteer program. The joint goal is to further law student development and nurture future Section leadership. LSEC plans to periodically update the Section on the work law students are doing within the committees.

LSEC is also continuing its Fireside Chat Series, where committee chairs discuss the work of their committees and provide examples of past and future projects for law student volunteers. LSEC hosted two Fireside Chats in Spring of 2023, showcasing the Food, Cosmetics, and Nutraceuticals Committee, the eFiling Committee, and the Information Security Committee. These were a hit among student attendees, and the committee leadership enjoyed getting to know interested law students and answering their questions. LSEC plans to host more of these this year. Interested Committees should reach out to LSEC leadership to get added to the agenda.

LSEC also hosts in-person receptions and panels for D.C.-area law students and at ABA meeting and National Institute locations. In November 2022, LSEC, the ePrivacy Committee, and the Homeland Security Committee co-sponsored the Ninth Annual Legal Careers in Cybersecurity, Privacy & Information Law for DC-area law students. Around 35 law students attended the event, which included a panel and a reception. Additionally, LSEC co-hosted an in-person student reception at the 2023 Scientific Evidence and the Courts with the AAAS Center for Scientific Responsibility and Justice. We plan to host future events for law students.

Finally, LSEC plans to pilot a new venture by having a committee sponsor a law student to write an article for the SciTech Lawyer on a topic of interest to the Committee and that is connected to the quarterly SciTech Lawyer theme. Several committees have expressed interest, and LSEC is currently working on the first pilot article.
