How the Appellate Process Can Effectuate Systemic Change

National Conference on Parent Representation

April 7, 2022
  • Annick Lenoir-Peek, JD, Office of the North Carolina Parent Defender
  • Robyn A. Veasey, JD, New Jersey Office of the Public Defender

We are frustrated with trial court practices that harm our clients’ interests and appeals are a good way to effect systemic changes, including addressing racial disparity. Appellate courts are often more aware and protective of due process than state legislatures. The session will focus on issue preservation, identification of the systemic issues that we want to address on appeal and the best ways to set those appeals up, use of clinical articles and client engagement with systemic change appeals.
