Section of Labor and Employment Law New/Young Lawyer Award

The Outreach to New and Young Lawyers Committee is seeking nominations for the Section of Labor and Employment Law New/Young Lawyer Award.  This Award recognizes up to two new and/or young members of the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law (LEL) who have demonstrated a commitment to the Section and to the advancement of the Section’s initiatives, specifically including promoting involvement and membership in the LEL Section.

This is an excellent way to honor and encourage those New and Young lawyers who have already exhibited an eagerness and enthusiasm for the Section and all that it offers.

Award Criteria

  • The nominees will be evaluated based upon the following criteria:
  • The nominee must be a current member of the Section of Labor and Employment Law.
  • The nominee must have practiced for five years or less OR be age 35 or younger (does not need to be both).
  • The nominee’s practice includes labor and employment law, whether in the private, public, in-house, non-profit or academic setting.
  • The nominee has demonstrated a commitment to the Section through active involvement, volunteering to participate in Section events and initiatives, or expressed a strong desire to become actively involved.
  • The nominee has promoted the Section, including efforts to encourage other new/young lawyers to become involved in the Section or to seek leadership opportunities within the Section.

Nomination Process

Nominations must be submitted by an LEL member.

To nominate an individual please submit the following information no later than July 1

Nominee and Nominator Information: Names, addresses, firm, corporation, organization or academic institution, constituency, telephone number(s), and e-mail address(es) for the Nominee and Nominator.

Nominee’s Bio: The nomination package should include a summary, of no more than three pages, of the nominee’s practice or organization.  Information that would also be helpful includes principal areas of practice, the number of years practicing law, and other bar association activities.

Nomination Narrative: The nomination narrative should describe the efforts and contributions to the Section the nominee has made, or otherwise explain how the nominee has demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of the Section’s initiatives and membership.  Also, nominators may provide (but are not required to) the names and contact information of no more than three other individuals who, if asked, could provide additional information.

Letters of Support: Letters of support from other individuals and organizations aware of the nominee's contributions may be included, but are not required.

Award Selection and Presentation
The LEL Outreach to New and Young Lawyers Committee will review the nominations and make recommendations to the LEL Chair and Chair-Elect.  The Section may select one or two nominees each year.  If one nominee is selected, best efforts shall be made to rotate the nominee’s constituency each year (i.e., Union, Employee, Neutral, Employer, Government, In-House).  If two nominees are selected in any year for the Award, they shall be from different constituencies (e.g., two Neutrals would not be selected in a single Award year).  There is no guarantee that the Award will be given in every year.  Whether the Award is given, and to whom, depends upon the quality of the nominees.

The award will be presented during the Annual Section of Labor and Employment Law Conference.
