Pete Buttigieg is the U.S. Secretary of Transportation. He is the first openly LGBTQ+ Cabinet member in U.S. history. In 2020, Buttigieg ran as candidate for president of the United States. He was the first openly LGBTQ+ person to run in a major presidential campaign. His narrow win in the Iowa caucuses made him the first openly LGBTQ+ candidate to win a presidential primary or caucus. Prior to his presidential campaign, he was the mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Pete Buttigieg served in the United States Navy Reserve as an intelligence officer and was deployed to the War in Afghanistan for seven months in 2014.
