2021 CRSJ Spring Council Meeting

Virtual | April 15-16

About the Meeting

The Section held its 2021 Spring Council Meeting virtually on April 15-16. During the third meeting of the 2020-21 Bar year, Section Chair Angela J. Scott continued the discussion on the civil rights & social justice issues presented during her Bar year, and the Section's role in addressing them. Read on for more detailed descriptions of the events of the Spring meeting.

Best Practices for Section Engagement

Section Council, committee, liaisons, and task force members were all in attendance to share and hear from one another on best practices for Section engagement. Section Chair Angela Scott and staff provided guidance and information on the Bar year initiatives, Section programming, and much more!

CRSJ Volunteers

During the Spring Meeting, the Section held a friendly competition for a good cause, hosting its second volunteer opportunity in coordination with the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service for ABAFreeLegalAnswers.org. Going head-to-head, state vs. state, over 65 individuals signed up to answer pro bono questions. After a brief tutorial and message from our Chair Scott on the importance of pro bono work, volunteers separated into break-out rooms to discuss questions. The team that answered the most questions was South Carolina with an astounding 23 questions completed! Thanks to our generous volunteers for their time and expertise.

The Civil Rights Lawyer, Part 3: Staying Well While Doing Good

Held in conjunction with CRSJ's quarterly Council meetings, this four-part professional series provides insights and perspectives about pursuing a career in the realm of civil rights law. The third installment includes lawyers and former lawyers who are working or have worked in the areas of civil rights and social justice. They shared their strategies and lessons learned for balancing health and wellness while advocating for civil rights and social justice.

Business Meetings

The Section's Spring Council Meeting provided additional opportunities to learn about our committee work and Section projects. Other Council matters discussed include: staff and Committee activities, resolution development and approval for the 2021 ABA Annual Meeting, Section Chair Angela Scott's five initiatives,  and the 2021 Thurgood Marshall Award honoring civil rights leader Dr. Clarence B. Jones.
