2021 Thurgood Marshall Award Celebration

Honoring Dr. Clarence B. Jones

On August 6, the ABA Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice honored legendary civil rights leader, Dr. Clarence B. Jones with the 2021 Thurgood Marshall Award. The virtual event was a joyous moment for the civil rights legal community, with acclaim pouring in from the audience and special guests who paid homage to the legend. President Barack Obama also shared his thoughts on the awardee, and told the audience to "embrace action over resignation. The Celebration is available ON-DEMAND through the Hybrid Annual Meeting website.

CRSJ Volunteers: Free Legal Answers Event | Aug. 4

The Section held its fourth volunteer opportunity for Free Legal Answers. Participants heard from Section Chair Angela Scott on the importance of pro bono work, received a brief tutorial, and moved into jurisdictional breakout rooms to respond to questions asked by those in need.

Section Council, committee, liaison and task force members joined for a kickoff reception to celebrate the Section, the 2020-21 bar year, and all we have accomplished. This event was open to all Section members and non-members.

CLE SHOWCASE Beyond the Schoolhouse Gate: Student Speech Rights After Mahanoy School District v. B.L. | Aug. 4

NOW ON-DEMAND THROUGH SEPT. 10 ON THE ANNUAL MEETING WEBSITE. The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled on the critical issue of the right of public school students to engage in free expression outside of school and when they may be subject to school discipline for speech beyond school grounds. This panel explores the practical and legal consequences of this critically important Supreme Court ruling.

Best Practices for Section Engagement | Aug. 5

This quarterly meeting, held in conjunction with Section Council meetings, provided the opportunity for Section leaders and committee, liaison and task force members to share their experiences, hear from one another, and collaborate on their projects.

The Civil Rights Lawyer: Looking Back and Leaning Forward | Aug. 6

The final installment in the Civil Rights Lawyer series provides attendees with an opportunity to learn from speakers who have been at the forefront of civil rights work. Speakers John C. Brittain, Eva Paterson, Leslie Proll, Paul M. Smith, and Nia Davis Sigona shared poignant lessons learned in their civil rights careers. Attendees asked questions of the speakers and garnered advice and counsel to fortify them to continue the long work of civil rights and social justice.

Section Annual Meeting & Leadership Award Ceremony | Aug. 7

As the Section closed out its final quarterly meeting of the 2020-21 bar year, we held the annual elections, presented the committee excellence award, and pass the gavel to our 2021-22 Section Chair.
