Our Rule of Law Work in Central Asia

Monitoring drug-related criminal cases

ABA ROLI has implemented its U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL)-supported Court Monitoring of Drug Related Criminal Cases in Central Asia program since 2014. This program addresses trans-border drug crimes by engaging justice system stakeholders from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Each country has trained and supported court monitors to observe proceedings of narcotics cases and then used the data gathered to develop national and regional approaches to legislative reform that will lead to more efficient investigation and prosecution of drug crimes. Through multiple exchange opportunities, members of working groups that propose these reforms have gained an international perspective on drug crime prosecution practices that they are able to incorporate into their own recommendations for reform.
